Quilt Square: "Crown of Thorns"

This barn has been in the family for 70 years through three generations since 1938. Ownership went from Roger and Hester Hamilton to Addison and Gertrude Hamilton to Wayne and Nancy. The barn was built by Alexander Black in 1865 (written on some inside timbers) and was constructed of locally grown oak timbers with a limestone foundation.

The barn is used for livestock and hay storage. The old hay fork and track are still mounted in the interior of the roof line.

The family selected the quilt block "Crown of Thorns", because they felt that it would serve as a daily reminder of the sacrifice the Savior, Jesus Christ, made on the cross and that he died for our sins so that we can have eternal life in Heaven with Him.

Alexander Black's original log cabin from 1827 still exists and is located by the main house. He donated one acre of land to Salem Township for a school. This land is now pasture just west of the old school buildings.

The Troyer's have owned the farm for five years. The barn was originally used for pigs, but is currently being used for horses. This is the original McAdams Farm.
