Barn Quilt Locations

384 Park Avenue, Urbana

Barn Owners: Champaign County Fairgrounds

Quilt Square: "Enderle Special"

Sponsors: National Tractor Pullers Association (NTPA)

The present grandstand was built in 1949 and replaced a wooden structure. It has 3,000 seats overlooking the racetrack. When it appeared that the seats could not be installed in time for the 1949 fair, a gentleman volunteered to get the job done if the fair would allow Pari Mutual betting on horse racing. The Fair Board agreed and more than 150 volunteers erected the seats in a little over one week. The grandstand houses the Fair Board administrative offices, restrooms, and display spaces. It is a sturdy masonry building with large doors on both ends to allow easy access for large equipment.  Recently, the grandstand was restored in time for the 2009 Champaign County Fair.

The quilt block selected to be displayed on the grandstand is called "Enderle Special" and represents the National Tractor Pullers Association's sponsorship of the tractor pulls held annually at the fairgrounds.
